Boyle Strikes out 10 But Dragons Lose to West Michigan, 4-1

Dayton, Ohio - Five West Michigan pitchers combined to allow just four hits as the Whitecaps defeated the Dayton Dragons 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. West Michigan defeated the Dragons in five of six games in the series.

A crowd of 7,762 was in attendance at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District.

Game Recap: West Michigan built a 3-0 lead over the first three innings and limited the Dragons offense. Dayton scored in the sixth when Elly De La Cruz reached on an infield single, stole second and third, and scored on Ruben Ibarra's ground out to make it 3-1. But the Dragons had just one hit over the remaining three innings and West Michigan added a run in the eighth to close out the scoring.

Dragons starting pitcher Joe Boyle struck out 10 in five innings, reaching double-figures in strikeouts for the third time this season. Boyle (3-3) allowed just two hits but he walked four and surrendered three runs (two earned) and was charged with the loss. Boyle struck out the last six batters he faced.

Jonathan Willems went 2 for 4 and had the Dragons only extra base hit, a ground rule double in the second inning. De La Cruz was 1 for 3 and kept his batting average above .300 at .303.

The Dragons fell to 5-10 (44-37 overall) in the second half, while West Michigan improved to 11-4 (42-39 overall).

Up Next: The Dragons do not play on Monday. They open a six-game road series in Eastlake, Ohio against the Lake County Captains on Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m.
