Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - A towering go-ahead solo homer off the bat of Wander Javier in the eighth inning helped hand Cedar Rapids Kernels a series victory over Quad Cities with a 6-4 win on Sunday afternoon. Kyler Fedko and Jake Rucker each collected two-hit games while the former added a pair of RBI in the series-clinching win. The Kernels are now 49-32, 6-9 in the second half.

Brent Headrick threw extremely well in his return to the rotation, retiring 12 of 13 batters faced with five strikeouts. The lefty allowed one run on a solo homer across his 4.0 innings of work, throwing 31 of 42 pitches for strikes.

Trailing 1-0 entering the home half of the third, Will Holland drew a walk and advanced to second on an errant pickoff throw. Fedko plated him with a game-tying RBI single laced back up the middle, then Christian Encarnacion-Strand unloaded on a mammoth two-run homer down the left field line to put C.R. up 3-1. Charles Mack drew a bases-loaded walk six batters later to cap a four-run third.

Quad Cities chipped away with a run in the fifth, seventh and eighth to draw the game even at 4-4 going into the bottom of the eighth. Javier promptly blasted the first pitch of the frame 443 feet to deep center field, handing the Kernels a 5-4 lead on his eighth long ball of the year. Holland reached on a fielder's choice with one down, stealing second then scoring an insurance run on another run-scoring single off the bat of Fedko.

Hunter McMahon earned the win in relief with 2.0 innings of work, allowing a run on four hits while striking out one.

The Kernels are idle on Monday before opening a six-game road series in Beloit on Tuesday evening at 6:35 p.m. CT.
