Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons edged out the South Bend Silver Hawks 4-2 Tuesday night at Dow Diamond, using six hits and a career night from starting pitcher Josh Wall to improve their 2010 record against South Bend to 10-0.
Wall twirled 11 strikeouts, in front of a Tuesday-night franchise-high 5,735 fans, to tie the career-best he set earlier in the season against Lake County on 5/29.
"I felt good you know, [I was] trying to get ahead early with the fast ball," Wall said of his strategy. "I had the slider working real good today, so I just kept throwing them and kept putting them away."
The Silver Hawks scored the first run of the game on a pair of singles to centerfield in the second inning, but the Loons responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own. Outfielder Stetson Banks, who made his Dow Diamond debut, hit an RBI-single to right field and then was driven in on Rafael Ynoa's two-run double down the right field line.
"It's definitely big," Wall said of the instant run support. "I gave up the run in the second...and I was pretty frustrated. [The team] came back and scored three. It was a big pick-me-up."
Wall went on to throw for seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits to earn his second winning decision in a row. Steve Smith came in to pitch a scoreless eighth and Luis Vasquez closed the game out for his 12th save of the season. The Loons pitching squad combined for 13 strikeouts on the night to one walk.
In the bottom of the third, Angelo Songco extended his hit-streak to nine games with a solo home run, his sixth of the year, that went over the right field wall and gave the Loons a 4-1 lead.
The S-Hawks found another run in the top of the fifth when Andrew Fie hit a double to center field. Fie's hit would be the last one for South Bend, who finished with a total of five on the night.
South Bend starter Charles Brewer (4-5, 1.83) was tagged with the loss, after allowing four runs on five hits over seven innings.
RHP Brett Wallach (4-0, 3.62) will make the start for the Loons on Wednesday, in the second game of their three-game series against the South Bend Silver Hawks, against RHP Eric Smith (5-3, 2.73).
