Dayton Dragons News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind. - Frank Pfister went 4 for 4 with three runs batted in and Chase Ware pitched out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Dayton Dragons held on to defeat the Fort Wayne TinCaps 9-8 on Tuesday. The win was the Dragons fourth straight.
Dayton took a 9-4 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning but escaped narrowly with the win. The Dragons have scored 29 runs on 46 hits over their four game winning streak.
After Fort Wayne took a 1-0 lead against Dragons starting pitcher Ricky Bowen in the second, the Dragons took a brief lead in the top of the third. Dayton's Josh Garton was hit by a pitch and Pfister lined a single to left. Mark Fleury followed with a double to the fence in center field to bring in Garton and Pfister and give the Dragons a 2-1 lead.
Fort Wayne came back to tie the game in the third on a run-scoring single by Jason Hagerty at 2-2.
But the Dragons batted around in the sixth inning, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring five runs against Fort Wayne reliever Pedro Hernandez. Cameron Satterwhite started the inning with a double to center. Ryan LaMarre walked. With one out, Chris Richburg hit a ground ball to third that was misplayed by Fort Wayne's Edinson Rincon for an error as Satterwhite scored to give Dayton the lead. Shane Carlson followed with a chopper off the third base bag for a double that scored LaMarre and moved Richburg to third. Tommy Nurre's sacrifice fly brought in Richburg to make it 5-2. After Josh Garton was hit by a pitch, Carlson scored on a wild pitch to give Dayton a 6-2 lead. Garton scored on Pfister's single to center to make it 7-2.
Fort Wayne answered with a two-run bottom of the sixth against Dayton reliever Jason Braun. Junior Martinez replaced Braun to start the seventh and worked a scoreless inning before leaving with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth. Chase Ware entered the game for Dayton and allowed an infield hit that brought in one run and a three-run double to James Darnell to pull Fort Wayne to within one at 9-8. But Ware worked out of further trouble to hold the lead into the ninth inning.
Fort Wayne's Edinson Rincon started the ninth with a single to center and went to second on a bunt play in which Ware threw wildly to first base to allow the hitter to reach safely. After pinch hitter Dean Anna sacrificed the runners to second and third, Jonathan Galvez walked to load the bases with one out. But Ware struck out Danny Payne and Jeudy Valdez to end the game as the Dragons held on for their fourth straight win.
Bowen went five innings for the Dragons and struggled with his control but got two double play balls to help minimize the damage. He allowed five hits and two earned runs with four walks and three strikeouts to earn his first career victory.
The Dragons collected 11 hits. In addition to Pfister's 4 for 4 performance, Satterwhite and Carlson each had two hits.
Dayton (28-36) will play at Fort Wayne again on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. J.C. Sulbaran (3-3, 4.94) will start for Dayton against Fort Wayne's Daniel Sarria (1-2, 3.09). The next home game is Friday, June 18th against the Great Lakes Loons at Fifth Third Field.
Notes: Pfister is batting .560 on the road trip, going 14 for 25...Satterwhite has hit in six straight games. He is batting .556 during the streak, going 15 for 27...Ware's consecutive scoreless inning streak ended at 22 and one-third innings, the longest of 2010 for a Dayton pitcher.
