South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Midland, MI - With a 4-2 loss to Great Lakes on Tuesday night, the Silver Hawks have fallen to 0-10 against the Loons in 2010. The Silver Hawks, who have been eliminated from playoff contention in the first half, must now win their remaining five games to get to .500 in the first half of the season.
South Bend starter Charles Brewer (LP, 4-5) took the loss despite another pretty good outing. Brewer entered the game with a 1.45 ERA, and allowed just four earned runs in 7.0 innings to raise that mark to 1.83 - still one of the top three marks in the league. Brewer is now 0-3 against Great Lakes this season.
Brewer struck out six and walked only two but fell again on another night with a lack of run support.
After the Silver Hawks had a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, the Loons did all their damage in the second and third innings against Brewer. JT Wise walked with two outs in the second, igniting a rally that led to three runs. Stetson Banks had a RBI single and Rafael Ynoa added a two run double as part of the defining inning in the Loons victory.
Angelo Songco hit a solo home run in the fourth that gave Great Lakes a 4-1 lead.
Josh Wall (WP, 2-4) struck out 11 batters in 7.0 innings earning just his second win of 2010. The 11 K's match the season high for Wall in 2010.
Matt Helm had an early RBI to score David Nick in the second inning that gave the Silver Hawks a brief lead. Andrew Fie added a RBI double in the fifth to make it 4-2, but that would be the last hit the Silver Hawks would get in the game.
Luis Vasquez (SV, 12) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to improve to a perfect 12-for-12 in save situations.
The three game series continues on Wednesday night with another 7:05 scheduled first pitch. Right hander Eric Smith (5-3, 2.73 ERA) will go for his team leading sixth win while Great Lakes counters with RHP Brett Wallach (4-0, 3.62 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
