Peoria Chiefs News Release
Burlington, IA - The Peoria Chiefs were shut out by the last-place Burlington Bees 2-0 Wednesday night, dealing a blow to their first half playoff hopes. The Chiefs, 35-30, must now win out and need help to chase down both Clinton and Quad Cities in the Western Division's Wild Card race.
The Chiefs had the game's first scoring chance in the second inning against Bees' hurler Sugar Ray Marimon making his MWL debut. Greg Rohan led off with a double, but Marimon retired the next three batters to leave Rohan in scoring position.
Burlington got to Nick Struck for the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth. Wil Myers led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch. He advanced to third on a ball-four wild pitch to Joey Myers and came around to score when catcher Jonathon Mota fired the pickoff throw into left field.
The Chiefs put a runner in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings but couldn't crack Marimon. Mota doubled with one out in the fifth but the next two Chiefs popped pit in foul territory. Matt Cerda doubled with one out in the sixth but Marimon got Rohan to fly out and DJ Fitzgerald popped out to end the threat.
No Chiefs runner got past first base over the last three innings and the Bees added an insurance run against Ronny Morla in the eighth. Gerard Hall blooped a double in front of a late-breaking Nelson Perez in left field to start the inning. With two outs, Lewis singled up the middle to score Hall for a 2-0 Bees lead. The Chiefs went in order against Ryan Dennick in the ninth.
Struck (2-7) takes the tough loss allowing just one run on four hits over five innings. He struck out one, walked two and threw a pair of wild pitches. Morla allowed one run on two hits over three innings while striking out three.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Nick Struck (RHP) - This marks the second start in a row the Chiefs have not scored while the Oregon native has been in the game. He allowed just one run on four hits over five innings in the loss.
