Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Burlington right-hander Nate Long limited the Clinton offense to just a hit and a walk over five innings and struck out seven, making a pair of unearned runs scored against right-hander George Mieses stand up in the Bees' 5-1 victory over the LumberKings Saturday night at Alliant Energy Field.

Long (W, 5-1) retired the first nine batters he faced and didn't allow a single hit until the fifth, when Steven Baron broke up the no-no with a liner over the head of second-baseman Nino Leyja. Holding just a 1-0 lead at that point, Long made quick work of the Kings after Baron's single, retiring the next three hitters to strand him at first base.

Both runs allowed by Mieses (L, 1-9) were unearned as the result of errors. Tony Thompson singled with two outs in the first inning, took second base on a wild pitch and scored as second-baseman Jetsy Extrano misfired to first base following a routine grounder off the bat of A.J. Kirby-Jones. The Bees increased the lead to 2-0 in the sixth inning as Jose Crisotomo reached on a bunt single to the mound, raced to third after Mieses threw the ball away to first and scored on Thompson's sacrifice fly to left.

The LumberKings cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth as Julio Morban beat out a bunt single up the first-base line and scored on a two-out single to right-center from Kevin Rivers. Matt Browning, who had walked in the inning, advanced to third base but would be left stranded as Baron lined out to deep center field to end the inning. Left-hander Max Peterson (H, 2 gave up that run but nothing more on two hits over 3.0 innings, walking three and striking out five.

After being denied the tying run, the Kings watched the deficit grow to three runs as right-hander Jonathan Arias yielded a single to Yordy Cabrera, RBI double to Leyja and sacrifice fly to Royce Consigli in the seventh inning. Right-hander Keli'i Zablan gave up a double to Leyja, infield single to John Nester and RBI single to Consigli in the ninth as the Bees raised the lead to 5-1.

Bees' right-hander Daniel Tenholder worked a perfect non-save ninth to close out the LumberKings, striking out two.

Rivers finished 1-for-4 with the only RBI for Clinton. Consigli drove in two of the five runs for Burlington on 1-for-4 hitting.

The LumberKings (1-1, 25-47) and Bees (1-1, 46-26) conclude the series tomorrow afternoon at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM. Left-hander Anthony Fernandez (2-2, 4.17) makes the start for Clinton, while Burlington counters with right-hander Josh Bowman (5-2, 2.98).
