South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - Yazy Arbelo hit a tie-breaking solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifting the South Bend Silver Hawks to a dramatic 3-2 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps at Coveleski Stadium on Saturday evening.
Saturday was Justin Upton Bobblehead night at the Cove, but Arbelo's homer in the eighth might have been longer than any Upton hit in his time with South Bend. With a 2-2 tie, Arbelo took the pitch from Ramon Lebron (LP, 2-1) down the right field line, over the wall, over the construction area, over the party deck, and into the parking lot. It was 18th home run of the season, which puts him tied for tenth on the Silver Hawks single season leaderboard.
Both starting pitchers excelled in short stints on the mound, with South Bend's Mike Bolsinger (ND) and West Michigan's Josue Carreno (ND) exchanging four scoreless innings. It wasn't until pitch counts forced early relief work that the teams were able to dent the dish.
West Michigan struck first on a Steven Moya home run in the top of the fifth against Dan Taylor (ND). Taylor allowed just the one run over his 3.2 innings on the mound, yet saw his ERA go up to 2.02 on the season.
South Bend answered in the bottom of the fifth against Patrick Cooper (ND). Roberto Ortiz, Chris Jarrett, and Gerson Montilla had singles to load the bases, and Raywilly Gomez and Zach Walters drew bases loaded walks to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
It remained that way until the top of the eighth, when Jeremy Erben (WP, 3-1) took over with two outs and gave up a solo home run to Hernan Perez. After Arbelo's blast gave the Hawks the lead back, Erben pitched out of a two-on jam in the top of the ninth to close out the victory.
The two teams wrap up the South Bend portion of the six game series on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 PM Eastern Time. The pitching matchup is set for RHP J.R. Bradley (2-9, 5.35 ERA) against West Michigan's LHP Brian Flynn (0-0, 6.23 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 1:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
