The Calgary Vipers used three home runs to defeat the Yuma Scorpions 9-5 in the first half of a double-header featuring two seven inning games at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning Calgary hit their first long ball of the game and followed with two more big flies a frame later to add insurance. With the victory the Vipers have won five straight contests and improve to 5-1 on the second half and 28-21 overall on the Golden Baseball League season.
Scott Watson was solid out of the bullpen pitching two scoreless innings out of the bullpen without allowing a walk while Anastacio Martinez (2-4) recorded the win by allowing three runs in four innings.
Yuma scored first in the top of the second inning when Jonel Pacheco tripled and scored on a Francisco Murillo run batted in single for a 1-0 lead.
Calgary responded to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame as Drew Miller walked, Caonabo Cosme doubled, and Jorge Mejia hit a sacrifice fly.
The Scorpions took the lead back in the third when Eric Scriven and Peeter Ramos singled followed by a Pacheco sacrifice fly for a 2-1 advantage.
Back and forth the game continued in the bottom of the inning as Jonny Kaplan doubled and with two outs Brent Metheny doubled in the tying run and Julio Ramirez singled in the go-ahead run for a 3-2 Vipers' lead.
The game was quickly tied at 3-3 in the fourth frame when Johny Celis doubled, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Shelby Robertson RBI groundout.
Right back answered the Snakes in the bottom of the fourth as Mejia walked and Luis Taveras launched his sixth long ball of the season for a 5-3 advantage.
After holding the Scorpions scoreless Calgary opened up the game in the fifth frame when Guillermo Reyes singled, Ramirez walked, Miller smoked his 13th big fly of the season, and Cosme made it back-to-back long balls with his sixth of the year for a 9-3 lead.
In the top of the seventh Yuma made the score 9-5 as Ramos and Eric Church walked followed by RBI singles from Pacheco and Franklin Lopez.
Game 2 of this double-header starts shortly at 9:00 PM MDT on Tuesday July 22nd.
The Vipers conclude this three-game series against the Yuma Scorpions in Calgary at Foothills Stadium on Wednesday July 21st at 7:05 PM MDT for Weiner Wednesday with hotdogs sold for $1.00.
Calgary welcomes the Edmonton Capitals on Friday July 23rd at 7:05 PM MDT, Saturday July 24th and Sunday July 25th at 1:35 PM MDT, and Monday July 26th at 7:05 PM MDT for Paint the Park Pink weekend. On Saturday the Vipers will also host "Saskatchewan Shines! Rider Day at the Park".
