Double-Plays Douse Flyers in Loss to Chico

July 20, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Orange County Flyers News Release

The Orange County Flyers hit into a franchise record-tying four double plays killing momentum in the early innings in a loss to the Chico Outlaws, 3-2, at Goodwin Field on Tuesday. The Outlaws got their offense from former major leaguer Bobby Hill's two-run homer and JJ Sherrill's RBI double to take game three of the four game series in Fullerton.

The Outlaws (36-15, 3-3 second half) started the game off hot as the second batter of the game, Hill, blasted his fourth homerun of the year, giving the Outlaws a quick 2-0 lead over the Flyers (24-25, 2-2 second half).

The Flyers were able to fight back in the bottom of the third inning, when All-star Jimmy Rohan and Keith Ginter singled to get aboard, and David Harris, who went 3-4, drove in the Flyers first run of the game on an RBI to cash Rohan. A double-play ended the inning one batter later, halting the momentum.

In the bottom of the fifth the Flyers were able to tie the game at two, when Steve Boggs led off the inning with a double, and Derek Perren hit him home on a single for his 22nd RBI of the year. Perren was rolled up into a double play one batter later, the fourth consecutive inning in which OC hit into a twin-killing.

The Outlaws took back the lead in the top of the eighth, when Hill came through again for Chico with a lead off single, JJ Sherrill doubled to bring him in for the 3-2 lead.

Orange County had plenty of opportunities to take the lead on the Outlaws but the Flyers doubled their amount of double plays in a single game this season, stunting any chance of a Flyers rally.

Flyers starting pitcher Jake Renshaw pitched four innings, giving up two runs on four hits, and struck out one Outlaw, but got a no decision. Zac Cline, Bryan Harris, Mike Koons, and Andre Simpson combined for five innings giving up three hits and a run, but that run was costly as it gave Koons (2-1) his first loss of the season.

Reliever Josh Dew (4-0) picked up his fourth win of the year in relief, going two scoreless innings striking out three and giving up just one hit. Matt Perisho pitched a scoreless ninth, picking up his sixth save of the year.

The Orange County Flyers finish off their four game series against the Chico Outlaws Wednesday at 12:05pm at "The Station" Goodwin Field.
