Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(Bowie, MD) - The Baysox entered game one of their four game series, in serious need of a win, having dropped five out of their last seven games following the All-Star break, while being outscored 49-17 in those losses. The Baysox turned the tables on Erie, picking up a close win 3-1, improving to 5-11 in the season series between the two clubs. Radhames Liz was lights out for the Baysox, giving up only four hits through 6.2 innings, while striking out eight. Liz picked up his eighth win of the season and moved to (8-4) on the season.
The Baysox got on the scoreboard early to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Brian Bass led off the game with a double and came around to score on a fielding error during Paco Figueroa's at bat, with Figueroa reaching safely and Bass coming across for the first run of the game.
Eli Whiteside connected for his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the third, a solo shot, to give the Baysox a 2-0 lead.
Nick McCurdy spelled Radhames Liz from the game in the sixth, following a Matt Joyce triple with two outs. Joyce would come around to score on a wild pitch by McCurdy, cutting the Baysox lead to, 2-1. Morgan Clendenin would drive around Oscar Salazar, with an RBI single up the middle in the sixth inning, putting the Baysox ahead, 3-1.
That would be enough for the Baysox tonight as the bullpen would hold up only giving up three hits, following Liz' departure from the game. Bob McCrory picked up his fourth save of the season for the Baysox, relieving McCurdy in the ninth. McCrory allowed just one hit, while striking out two. Clete Thomas grounded to third base to end the ballgame, securing the victory for the Baysox. The Baysox managed only six hits on the night, five off of SeaWolves starter Andrew Kown, with Bryan Bass and Morgan Clendenin leading the way with two hits apiece. The Baysox pitchers tied a season high with 13 strikeouts.
