Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Drew Butera's RBI single plated what proved to be the winning run for the Binghamton Mets in their 3-2 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs at NYSEG Stadium Thursday. The B-Mets' win snaps their two-game losing streak.
Portland (48-45) went ahead in the first when Bubba Bell reached B-Mets starter Kevin Mulvey for a leadoff homer. However, the B-Mets (42-53) tied it in the bottom of the first when Corey Coles led off with a single, moved to third on Miguel Negron's hit and scored on Mike Carp's sacrifice fly.
The Sea Dogs got three straight two out hits off Mulvey (8-8) in the top of the fifth, with Cory Keylor driving in a run with a single, before Binghamton rallied to tie in the bottom of the frame. After singles by Ryan Coultas and Coles put runners at the corners, Negron reached on a fielder's choice that brought in Coultas.
Portland reliever Jose Vaquedano (1-3) began the sixth by hitting Carp with a pitch. Carp moved to second on Brett Harper's groundout before Butera's base hit to left brought Carp home.
Lino Urdaneta and Carlos Muñiz followed Mulvey with three innings of perfect relief. Muñiz got the final three outs for his 20th save in 23 chances.
Friday, the Binghamton Mets play a doubleheader against the Portland Sea Dogs. Marcos Carvajal (4-6, 4.04) and Salvador Aguilar (4-4, 5.89) will start for the B-Mets against Justin Masterson (2-0, 0.00) and lefty Andrew Dobies (3-2, 6.14) of Portland. Game time is 5:35 from NYSEG Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 5:20 on ESPN 1360 WYOS and continuing on Newsradio 1290 WNBF at 6:00.
Notes: 16 of Binghamton's 17 July contests have been decided by three runs or less. The B-Mets are 9-7 in those games...Mulvey, Urdaneta and Muñiz combined to retire the last 13 Sea Dogs in order....Muñiz became the second EL closer to pick up 20 saves, joining Connecticut's Brian Anderson...the homer allowed by Mulvey was his first since he served one up to Jeff Larish on Opening Night, 4/9 @ ERI.
