B-Mets Seek Baseball Gear For Roberto's Kids & Showcase "Community Cause Of The Game"
July 19, 2007 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
The Binghamton Mets will launch a new partnership with Roberto's Kids, a collection program designed to deliver new and gently used baseball and softball equipment to children in the United States, Africa and Latin America, at the team's doubleheader (5:35 pm) on Friday, July 20th. The B-Mets urge fans to donate gear that night and will give each participant in this baseball/softball equipment drive a free hot dog.
Oneonta resident Steve Pindar helped found Roberto's Kids (www.robertos-kids.org) with the assistance of the family of the late Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, who perished in a plane crash on a humanitarian trip to Nicaragua in 1972. The National Baseball Hall of Fame, NY Mets GM Omar Minaya and pitcher Pedro Martinez also support the mission that includes the donation of gloves, bats, balls, catcher's equipment, bases, batting helmets, cleats/sneakers, uniforms, hats & socks. The free hot dog deal applies to the July 20th game only, but the team will continue to collect gear for Roberto's Kids throughout the year.
Another team initiative to encourage charitable giving utilizing the special edition patriotic jerseys worn on Memorial and Independence days will debut at the B-Mets' upcoming homestand that begins on Thursday, July 19th against the Portland Sea Dogs (Double-A Red Sox). At many of the remaining home games, the B-Mets will highlight a "Community Cause of the Game."
Each non-profit organization selected as the B-Mets "Community Cause of the Game" will have the opportunity to promote their group at a table located inside the main gate. In addition to the ability to educate fans about its efforts to help those in need, each group will receive one of the B-Mets red, white & blue jerseys to raffle off. Fans at the game can buy one chance to win the jersey for $2 or three for $5. All proceeds generated in the patriotic jersey raffle will go directly to the "Community Cause of the Game." The following groups will be on hand for the next series of home games:
July 19th (7:05 pm)-Union Volunteer Emergency Squad
July 20th (5:35 pm DH)-Special Olympics
July 21st (7:05 pm)-Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier
July 22nd (1:05 pm)-Roberto's Kids
