Great Lakes Loons News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - A bewitched blooper by catcher Gersel Pitre morphed into a little-league home run, and the Great Lakes Loons shut out the West Michigan Whitecaps for the second game in a row, 1-0, on a muggy Saturday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The Loons have shut out the Whitecaps in back-to-back games for the first time in franchise history, a series that now totals 105 games. It is the fifth road shutout victory for the Loons in Comstock Park.

Locked in a pitchers' duel, the Loons offense managed four hits and drew one walk in the ballgame. The game's only run came aberrantly with two outs in the top of the eighth inning. Pitre slapped a 1-2 pitch from hard-throwing right-hander Will Vest into the air up the right field line. Dylan Rosa raced in to make the play, and the ball struck his glove in fair territory, but ricocheted off the mitt and rolled across the foul line.

As Pitre jogged to third, Rosa threw the ball from five feet wide of the right-field foul line into the Loons' bullpen along the left-field line, which allowed Pitre to score the lone run of the night. The play was scored as a double and an error on the Whitecaps' right fielder Rosa.

The Loons also received frontline pitching from starter Gerardo Carrillo (W, 2-1), who tossed a career-best seven innings on Saturday. The 19-year-old retired his last nine batters and totaled seven strikeouts with one walk and six hits allowed. Carrillo also stranded a runner on third base in three straight innings as West Michigan batted 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Darien Nunez (S, 2) faced the minimum over the final two innings of the game. When Wenceel Perez singled to right-center in the bottom of the eighth with one out, right-fielder Romer Cuadrado threw him out at second.

With a 2.5-game lead over West Michigan for first place in the playoff standings, the Loons have guaranteed at least a half-game lead over the Whitecaps through the end of this series (two games remain). Great Lakes can take the series with a win Sunday afternoon. First pitch is at 2 p.m.

The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team's home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
