West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - A critical mistake spelled disaster for the West Michigan Whitecaps as part of a 1-0 loss to the Great Lakes Loons in front of 8,844 fans Saturday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The shutout marks the second straight day in which West Michigan was held scoreless in a ballgame, and the 11th time the club has been blanked this season. Combined with Fort Wayne sweeping a doubleheader, the 'Caps and TinCaps sit tied for the second and final playoff spot in the Midwest League Eastern Division playoff race.
Whitecaps starter Chance Kirby, the Tigers 25th round pick in the 2018 draft, didn't allow a runner to advance to second through seven innings of scoreless baseball while striking out an impressive eight hitters. The "Caps put men on third base in three of the first five innings but failed to convert them into runs, as their scoreless streak reaches 18 innings. The Loons finally broke a scoreless tie in the eighth when Gersel Pitre lifted a bloop double down the right-field line before scoring when Dylan Rosa's errant throw to second base rolled into the bullpen down the left field line allowing Pitre to score from second and give the Loons their second straight shutout.
Will Vest (3-3) came on in relief allowing one unearned run on one hit in suffering his third loss on the year. Gerardo Carrillo (3-2) pitched seven innings allowing no runs on six hits while striking out seven in picking up his third win. Darien Nunez (0-2) came on in relief allowing one hit while striking out two in securing his second save. The Loons advance to 32-30 in the second half and 56-74 overall while the Whitecaps fall to 29-32 in the second half and 65-66 overall. John Valente and Colby Bortles each recorded two hits in a losing cause.
