Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Kernels scored three runs in the first inning and topped Kane County 6-2 on Saturday night in front of 3,906 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Kernels have now won the first two of a key three-game series against the Cougars.
Akil Baddoo, Michael Helman, and Trevor Larnach started the bottom of the first with consecutive singles. Larnach's RBI single scored a pair and gave the Kernels a 2-0 advantage. Michael Davis singled later in the inning to make the score 3-0.
Cedar Rapids (71-60, 39-23) took a 4-0 lead in the second inning when Ben Rodriguez's RBI single plated Baddoo. The Kernels recorded eight hits over the first two innings.
Kane County (68-62, 33-28) cut the lead to 4-1 in the fourth inning. Yoel Yanqui began the inning with a walk and later scored when Tim Susnara rolled into a double play. Ryan Grotjohn's sixth home run trimmed the score to 4-2 in the fifth inning.
Davis pushed the lead back to four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning with his seventh home run of the season for the Kernels. His home run to right field was a two-run blast and scored Jacob Pearson, who singled one batter earlier. This increased the lead to 6-2 and was the final tally of the night.
Carlos Suniaga (3-4) earned the win for the Kernels, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings in his first start for Cedar Rapids after rejoining the team earlier in the day. Zach Neff made his team debut and tossed 2.2 scoreless innings in relief while Rickey Ramirez picked up the final four outs.
Jayson McKinley (8-4) took the loss for Kane County, allowing five runs on 11 hits.
Cedar Rapids collected 13 hits on the night. The victory pushed the Kernels to 11 games over the .500 mark overall at 71-60 and matched a season-best record.
