Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs won twice on the Fourth of July, beating Wichita 8-3 and 7-3 at Haymarket Park. Lincoln improves to 22-25 on the season.
The first game was the completion of Friday's game, which had been suspended by rain in the middle of the third with the teams tied at one. Jarrett Gardner (6-3), called on in relief to continue the suspended game, allowed just two runs over four innings to earn his sixth win of the season. With the game tied at two in the bottom of the fifth, Josh Burrus hit a two-run home run, his ninth of the season, to give Lincoln the lead for good. The Wingnuts closed to within 4-3 with a run in the sixth, but the Saltdogs broke the game open with four runs in the eighth. Brandon Jones plated two runs with a single, and Deacon Burns followed with a two-run homer, his first of the season.
In game two, which was scheduled for seven innings, Wichita took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Tycen Povey and and Burrus each picked up an RBI in the second to put Lincoln up 2-1. The Wingnuts answered with two runs in the third, but the Saltdogs again had an answer. Phil Hawke tied the game with an RBI double in the fifth, and took the lead on Pichi Balet's RBI grounder. Lincoln then broke the game open late for the second straight contest, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Burrus hit a two-run triple, and Albenis Machado added an RBI groundout. Jim Paduch (4-3) pitched 6.2 innings for the win, and Chris Thompson got the final out for his 16th save.
Burns went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in game one, with Jones going 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Balet and Steve Alexander chipping in two hits and apiece. In game two, Burrus finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs, while Hawke went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Jones added another two hits.
Lincoln looks to end the first half of the season with a sweep over the Wingnuts Sunday night at 7:05.
