Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Grand Prairie, TX - The Sioux Falls Canaries (21-26) battled back from an early deficit, but the Grand Prairie AirHogs (21-26) slipped by the Birds with a 6-5 win on Saturday night at QuikTrip Park.

The scoring started with the AirHogs at the plate in the bottom of the first inning. Brandon Carter reached on a bunt single and then stole second base to get in scoring position. Cesar Nicolas singled to score Carter and give the AirHogs an early 1-0 lead.

The Canaries tied the game in the second inning. Trevor Lawhorn singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Lawhorn got to third on a groundout by J.D. Reininger and scored on a two-out single by Patrick Reilly. Lawhorn's run tied the game, 1-1.

Grand Prairie quickly went back in front with two runs in the bottom of the second. J.B. Tucker started the inning with a double, and then scored on a triple by former Canaries catcher Fraser Holmes. Holmes scored on a groundout by Aaron Garza to give the AirHogs a two-run advantage, 3-1.

The AirHogs expanded their lead in the third inning. The bases were loaded when Ron Fenwick singled, and Canaries starting pitcher Ben Moore proceeded to hit the next two batters, Chad Gabriel and J.B. Tucker, with pitches. Fenwick and Gabriel scored on a single by Garza, and Grand Prairie took a 5-1 lead.

The Canaries rallied in the fourth inning. Reininger opened the inning with a double and got to third on a single by Kyle Eveland. A single by Reilly scored Reininger to pull the Canaries within three, 5-2. Ken Lup plated both Eveland and Reilly with a double to make it a one-run game, 5-4. Tim Hutting singled to advance Lup to third and Joe Anthonsen brought him home with a single to tie the game, 5-5.

In the sixth inning, Cory Harris drew a two-out walk to load the bases. The walk by Harris put him on-base for the 40th consecutive game, five games shy of the American Association record set by Scooter Jordan with the St. Joe Blacksnakes in 2007 and 2008. While the Harris walk loaded the bases, Lawhorn grounded out to end the inning and the game remained tied.

Grand Prairie pulled back into the lead in the eighth inning. Javier Brito started the inning with a double. Two strikeouts later, Tucker singled to score Brito and put the AirHogs ahead by the 6-5 final.

Luke Prihoda (3-1) made the lead hold up in keeping the Canaries to just one hit while pitching the final 3.1 innings of the game to get the win. Ryan Grant (1-2) gave up one run on three hits in two innings of work to suffer the loss for the Canaries.

The Canaries and AirHogs wrap-up their three-game series on Sunday night at 6:05 p.m. The Birds return to Sioux Falls for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Fort Worth Cats on July 7. The game, which will mark the beginning of the second half, will feature a "Fly Away Giveaway" presented by Allegiant Air.
