Sioux City Explorers News Release

Sioux City - The Sioux City Explorers defeated St. Paul 4-1 Saturday at Lewis and Clark Park for their second consecutive win over the Saints.

Sioux City took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Dustin Jones led off with an infield hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Justin Toole. After stealing third base, Jones scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Nelson.

St. Paul tied the game in the second inning on a single by Kyle Johnson that scored Jacob Butler who led off the inning with a walk. That would be the only run the Saints would score.

The game stayed tied at 1-1 until the seventh inning when the Explorers had three straight singles, including a RBI hit by Derek Schmerhorn that gave the X's a 2-1 lead. Two batters later, Schmerhorn scored on a safety squeeze by Brett Mieras to make it a 3-1 lead for the Explorers. Sioux City added another insurance run in the eighth as Justin Nelson led off the inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.

The win by the Explorers over St. Paul and two wins by Lincoln over Wichita creates a three-way tie for second place in the American Association North.

The Explorers will close out the first half of the season against St. Paul Sunday at Lewis and Clark Park. Game time will be 6:05pm.
