St. Paul Saints News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA - The St. Paul Saints aren't gaining any momentum for the second half, which begins Monday, as they lost for the third straight time and eighth time in their last 10 games, 4-1 to the Sioux City Explorers on Saturday night at Lewis and Clark Park.
Both starting pitchers were magnificent and didn't give up much. Saints starter and St. Scholastica graduate Mark Moriarty gave up a run in the first and then settled down. Dustin Jones led off with an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Nelson. Moriarty didn't allow another hit until a lead off single in the fifth.
The Saints couldn't do much more against Explorers starter Ty Marotz. In the second they tied the game when Jake Butler and Brent Krause led off with back-to-back walks. With two outs and Butler at third Kyle Johnson knocked home the run tying the game at one.
The game stayed that way until the sixth when Moriarty gave up back-to-back singles to James Boone and Alex Llanos putting runners at the corners. Moriarty gave way to Mike Bille. He gave up an RBI single to Derek Schermerhorn. With runners at the corners Brent Dean laid down a safety squeeze, but first baseman Butler threw out Llanos at the plate. The next hitter Brett Mieras was more successful laying down the safety squeeze that scored Schermerhorn to make it 3-1.
The Saints couldn't muster anything over the final two innings and dropped to a season low three games under .500. Moriarty did pitch well going 6.0 innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out four.
The same two teams meet Sunday night at 6:05 p.m. in the finale of the three game series at Lewis and Clark Park. The Saints send RHP Charlie Ruud (3-3, 4.68) to the mound against Explorers RHP Tyler Meigs (0-4, 3.28). The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
