Lightning Sign Free Agent Center Trevor Smith

TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Bay Lightning, NHL parent club of the AHL's Norfolk Admirals, have signed free agent center Trevor Smith to a one-year, two-way contract today, Lightning vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman announced.

Smith, 6-foot-1, 195 pounds, played in 68 games with the Syracuse Crunch and Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League last season, recording 20 goals and 43 points. He also notched five power-play goals and one shorthanded goal.

A 26-year-old native of North Vancouver, British Columbia, Smith has skated in 282 career AHL games with the Crunch, Falcons and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He has registered 92 goals and 192 points with 157 penalty minutes. During the 2009-10 season with Bridgeport, Smith ranked second in goals (21), tied for third in assists (26) and third in points (47) on the team. In 2008-09, Smith led the Sound Tigers in goals (30), was third in assists (32) and second in points (62).

Smith has played in seven career NHL games, all with the New York Islanders during the 2008-09 season. He has one career NHL goal. Smith has also appeared in 22 career ECHL games - all with the Utah Grizzlies in 2007-08 - scoring 11 goals and 25 points.

Before going pro, Smith played two seasons at the University of New Hampshire. In 78 games from 2005-06 and 2006-07, he recorded 31 goals and 63 points. He went undrafted and signed as a free agent with the Islanders on April 7, 2007.
