AHL Realignment Approved
July 5, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release
The Adirondack Phantoms in conjunction with the American Hockey League announced today that they will play in the newly formed Northeast Division. The Northeast Division will also consist of the Albany Devils (NJ), Bridgeport Sound Tigers (NYI), Connecticut Whale (NYR) and Springfield Falcons (CBJ).
The new division is part of an AHL realignment approved this week by the Board of Governors in their annual meeting in Hilton Head, S.C. American Hockey League President and C.E.O. David Andrews has announced that the AHL's structure will consist of six divisions of five teams each thus matching the NHL's alignment.
The format for the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs was also approved by the Board of Governors. Eight teams in each conference will qualify for the postseason, with three division winners earning the top three seeds and the next five teams in order of regular season points seeded fourth through eighth. The conference quarterfinals will be best-of-five series; the conference semifinals, conference finals and Calder Cup Finals will be best-of-seven series. Teams will be re-ordered after the first round so that the highest-remaining seed plays the lowest-remaining seed.
The regular season schedule format is still to be determined and the complete playing schedule for the 2011-2012 regular season will be announced later this summer.
Opening night for the Adirondack Phantoms will be on Saturday, October 8.
