Amerks to Remain in North Division for 2011-12 AHL Season
July 5, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The American Hockey League announced today the divisional alignment and playoff format for the 2011-12 season. The Rochester Americans will remain in the Western Conference's North Division as the league enters its second season with 30 active teams.
The North Division will have a different look in 2011-12, consisting of just five teams as Rochester will be paired up against the Grand Rapids Griffins, Hamilton Bulldogs, Lake Erie Monsters and Toronto Marlies. The Abbotsford Heat will move to the West, while the new St. John's franchise, formerly the Manitoba Moose, will begin play in the Atlantic.
Starting this season, the AHL will employ six divisions, comprising of five teams each within the Eastern and Western conferences. The format for the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs was also approved by the Board of Governors. Eight teams in each conference will qualify for the postseason, with the three division winners earning the top three seeds and the next five best teams in order of regular-season points seeded fourth through eighth. The conference quarterfinals will be best-of-five series; the conference semifinals, conference finals and Calder Cup Finals will be best-of-seven series. Teams will be re-ordered after the first round so that the highest-remaining seed plays the lowest-remaining seed.
The regular-season schedule format is still to be determined, and the complete playing schedule for the 2011-12 regular season, which begins October 7th, will be announced later this summer.
