Norfolk Admirals News Release
TAMPA BAY - The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired defenseman Matt Lashoff and right wing Martins Karsums from the Boston Bruins in exchange for right wing Mark Recchi and a second-round choice in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Lawton announced.
"The acquisitions of Matt Lashoff and Martins Karsums today help the Tampa Bay Lightning as we look to build a younger, more aggressive team," said Lawton upon announcing the trade. "We believe both players are NHL-ready; Matt is an offensive defenseman who skates very well and Martins is a smart, reliable, hard worker who gives us some depth at the forward position.
"We'd like to thank Mark Recchi for his hard work and service to the Tampa Bay Lightning. We're happy that we can position him to make another run at a Stanley Cup. At the same time, Lightning fans should be comfortable in knowing this trade helps make us a better team as we focus on the future."
Lashoff, 22, is a 6-foot-2, 204-pound native of East Greenbush, New York. He has skated in 16 games with the Bruins this season, recording an assist and 10 penalty minutes. A 2005 first-round draft choice of the Bruins, Lashoff has appeared in 46 games with Boston during the past three seasons, recording a goal, seven assists and 22 penalty minutes.
A talented puck-mover with an offensive flair, Lashoff has skated in 164 games with Providence of the American Hockey League during the past four seasons, tallying 26 goals, 95 points and 181 penalty minutes. He was selected as a starter for the Planet/USA team at the 2007-08 AHL All-Star Game. Prior to turning pro Lashoff played three seasons of junior hockey with Kitchener of the Ontario Hockey League, recording 16 goals, 93 points and 284 penalty minutes in 162 games.
Karsums, 5-10 and 198 pounds, has played in six games with Boston this season, recording an assist and six shots on goal. He made his NHL debut on December 13 versus Atlanta and recorded his first NHL point with an assist on January 10 against Carolina. Originally drafted by the Bruins in the second round, 64th overall, at the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, Karsums spent the majority of this season with Providence, recording 17 goals and 41 points in 43 games. He is tied for second on the team in goals and is fourth in points. Karsums also leads the P-Bruins in shorthanded goals with three.
A native of Riga, Latvia, Karsums, 23, has played in 176 career AHL games with Providence, amassing 50 goals and 139 points. He has appeared in 22 career Calder Cup Playoff games, recording 10 goals and 14 points. Prior to turning pro, Karsums played in 139 games with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, tallying 78 goals and 144 points from 2003-06.
Recchi, signed as a free agent by the Lightning on July 8, 2008, appeared in 62 games with Tampa Bay this season, recording 13 goals, 45 points and 20 penalty minutes.
