Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... The Rochester Americans announced today that the team will hold a memorial night in honor of the legacy of Andrew Laughlin on Sunday, March 22nd. The Amerks host the Syracuse Crunch that night at The Blue Cross Arena at 6:05 p.m. All proceeds raised from ticket sales, in addition to the second intermission Star Toss, will be donated to aid the recovery of injured Rochester police officer Anthony DiPonzio.
All family and friends of Laughlin can purchase discounted tickets for 100 End seating for $15 ($18.25 regular price). All tickets must be ordered by Wednesday, March 18th. Please contact Nicole Petix at 454-5335 ext. 3021 for more information.
Laughlin, a 2003 graduate from the Aquinas Institute, tragically died at the age of 22 as a result of brain injuries he sustained following a car accident. In his memory, the Laughlin family launched the "Andy's Kids Scholarship Program" as a permanent endowment to provide annual funding to qualified individuals attending the Aquinas Institute and the State University of New York at Buffalo's Graduate School of Social Work.
Laughlin spent his life servicing the Rochester community and giving to others and it was his intention for his own children to attend the Aquinas Institute. In an effort to continue Laughlin's legacy of generosity, the Laughlin family has graciously agreed to donate all funds raised that night to Officer DiPonzio, a classmate of Laughlin at Aquinas, who is currently undergoing treatment for a brain injury he sustained in the line of duty on January 31st.
Since his death, Laughlin has continued to give to others through the Donor Recovery Program. The five individuals who received his organs have been discharged from the hospital and all are doing well. The Laughlin family also hosts an annual golf tournament during the summer in an effort to raise funds for the scholarship program.
Rochester kicks off its three-game weekend on the road with back-to-back tilts with the Lake Erie Monsters on Friday, March 6th and Saturday, March 7th at Quicken Loans Arena.
The Amerks hit the ice Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and will be in action Saturday afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. matinee. Both contests will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK, whtk.com and AHL Live. Saturday's game will also be broadcast live over the NHL Network. Fans can head down to The Distillery on Winton Road (3010) for the Amerks Official Viewing Party. Meet the Amerks Moose and win prizes throughout the afternoon.
