Charleston Dirty Birds News Release

The West Virginia Power lost 4-3 to the Lexington Legends at Appalachian Power Park on Friday night. The Power rallied late for the second straight game, but could not bring the tying run home from third in the bottom of the ninth.

West Virginia gained an early edge when Evan Chamber scored in the first inning without the benefit of a base hit. Chambers walked, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on a ground out by Aaron Baker.

Starter Kyle McPherson made the lead stick with four no-hit innings, but allowed three hits in the fifth, including a three-run home run by Jose Altuve. In the sixth, Jacob Goebbert added a solo home run against McPherson to build a 4-1 lead.

Luis Cruz pitched six solid innings before giving way to the bullpen. Coltin Pitkin shut down the Power in the seventh, but allowed a pair of runs on a single by Baker in the home half of the eight to narrow the score at 4-3. In the ninth, Ramon Cabrera walked and advanced to third with two outs, but Kirk Clark struck out Evan Chambers to end the game.

McPherson (5-8) took the loss despite setting a new single-game high with 11 strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings of work, while Cruz (4-1) picked up the win. Clark's effort in the ninth garnered his 18th save of the season.

The Power and Legends play the third game of this series at Appalachian Power Park on Saturday evening at 7:05 pm.
