Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
AUGUSTA, GA - In a back-and-forth battle, the Kannapolis Intimidators saw a six run lead erased, but eventually won the contest 11-10 against the Augusta GreenJackets on Friday night to even the series at one game each.
Tied at ten in the top of the eighth inning, Kyle Colligan singled to lead off the inning followed by a very costly error on what looked like a sure double play ball which put runners on the corners with no one out. After a strikeout, Brady Shoemaker chopped one in the infield, another potential double play ball, but it took a bad hop and only one out could be made to second, scoring what was the 11th and decisive run for the Intimidators (6-10).
The GreenJackets (8-8) behind starter Jeremy Toole got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off Cameron Bayne and in the Intimidators second at bat, back-to-back doubles by Ryan Hamme and Jose Vargas cut the lead to 2-1.
In the fourth inning the Intimidators put together one of their best offensive producing innings of the season. Shoemaker would lead off with a double, and with one out both Vargas and Dubler singled to load the bases with no one out. The next batter, Daniel Wagner hit a deep fly ball to center which plated two runs, and as it appeared that the centerfielder had a chance to catch it, Wagner only wound up at first base. Richard was next and singled in a run, Colligan reached on an error as did Ian Gac, before the final hit, a double by Shoemaker, his second in the inning stopped the scoring. On six hits and two errors the Intimidators score seven runs in an inning for the second time this season and take an 8-2 lead. Toole lasted just 3.1 after he went one inning in his first start against the Intimidators in Kannapolis.
Bayne struggled though in the fifth as he got a strikeout to start the inning, but in crazy fashion, Bayne allowed five straight singles, followed by a double and another single, seven straight hits before a double play ended the inning. In total, five runs came into score and the game-tying run was attempting to score in what was a 9-3 lead to start the inning, ended up at 9-8. Bayne lasted the entire inning and allowed eight runs, seven earned in five and gets a no decision.
The Intimidators scored their tenth run on a wild pitch in the six, which was matched by two runs in two innings by the GreenJackets, the later was a solo home run for Tommy Joseph off Garret Johnson to complete the comeback at 10-10 in the seventh.
Johnson (4-3), however, gets the win as the Intimidators tally in the eighth and hold on with two innings from Taylor Thompson, including a two-strikeout ninth for his second save of the year.
The game produced 29 hits and 21 runs, but is nowhere near the 17-14 and 13-9 games these two teams played in Kannapolis. Hamme led the Intimidators with three hits and has back-to-back multi-hit games to begin his tenure with the team.
The Intimidators are 5-4 in July and look to win two in a row for the first time since May 30th as Justin Collop is sent to the mound, he will be opposed by Brian Irving at 7:05 on Saturday in Augusta.
