
Lester's Night: Starter Retires 14 Straight After Giving Up Early Runs

NORMAL, IL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by the Illinois Corn Farmers, put Brett Lester on the mound to start the series finale against the Florence Freedom Wednesday. After giving up three runs in the first inning, Lester retired 14 straight batters beginning with the last out in the third inning, leading his team to a 5-3 win.
Lester struck out eight of the 14 batters he retired in a row, including striking out the side in the sixth inning. Lester finished the day, picking up his second win of the season on 7-2/3 innings, five hits, three runs and 10 strikeouts.
The CornBelters produced one run in the first to answer the Freedom attack and added four more runs over two innings, anchored by a solo home run by newcomer, right fielder Ross McCoy, in the sixth inning.
In the seventh inning, the CornBelters added three more runs, with the help from a 2 RBI single by shortstop Jeff Cowan and a one RBI double by third baseman Daniel Cox.
Cox was 2-for-4 on the night, with one RBI on double and single. First baseman Steven Alexander also contributed two hits, on a 2-for-4 night, with two singles and one RBI. Steve Raburn entered the game in the eighth inning to pick up his second save of the season.
The CornBelters will say goodbye to the Florence Freedom, as Normal wins the series, 2 games to 1. Thursday Normal will welcome into The Corn Crib the Evansville Otters. The CornBelters will call on Tyler Lavigne to start the game on the mound. The game is scheduled to start at 7 PM with the pre-game radio show beginning at 6:45 PM on 95.9 FM and WJBC.com.
