May 13, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lexington Legends News Release
Kody Hinze's two-run homer in the 10th inning sent the Lexington Legends past the Asheville Tourists 7-5 Thursday night in Asheville.
Hinze's drive to right center field came with one out in the 10th, and followed a single by J.D. Martinez. Hinze leads the South Atlantic League with nine home runs and 35 runs batted in.
Asheville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Legends came back with two runs in the third. Andy Simunic singled with one out, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Grant Hogue. Hogue continued around to third on a throwing error by left fielder Tyler Massey and scored on a single by Jose Altuve.
The Tourists regained the lead with three runs in the fourth, two coming home on a double by Eliezer Mesa. A two-out RBI double by Lexington's Rene Garcia in the sixth cut the Asheville lead to one at 4-3.
In the Lexington seventh, Asheville reliever Dan Perkins walked Brian Kemp and Simunic to start the inning. After a forceout, Rhett Ballard replaced Perkins. Jose Altuve sacrificed the runners to second and third. Jiovanni Mier lined a single to right field, scoring two runs and putting the Legends in front 5-4.
Asheville scored the tying run in the bottom of the seventh. Angelys Nina walked and moved to second on a single by Joe Sanders. With two outs, Nina stole third and came home when Garcia's throw went into left field for an error.
The score remained 5-5 until Hinze's homer in the 10th.
Jose Trinidad (3-1), who pitched the eighth and ninth, picked up the win. Chad Rose, (1-2) was the losing pitcher. Kirk Clark pitched a scoreless 10th to earn his fourth save.
The Legends have won their last three games. They have beaten the Tourists in all six meetings between the two in 2010.
Game three of the four-game series will be played Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
