Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats (22-12) cruised to a 6-2 win over the Rome Braves in front of 2,777 fans Thursday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. Savannah has won three in a row and four of five to improve to a season-best ten games over .500.
The Gnats never trailed Thursday, scoring twice in the second inning to open the game's scoring. After 1B Alex Gregory doubled and 2B Alonzo Harris singled, SS Wilmer Flores ripped an inside fastball down the leftfield line for a two run double that gave Savannah a 2-0 lead. Flores finished 3-4 with the double, two RBI, a run scored and is now hitting .343/.392/.577 (AVG/OBP/SLG) leading the Gnats in all three major rate categories.
The Gnats kept adding runs on their way to a 6-0 lead. In the fourth, after 3B Jefry Marte singled, Gregory drove home a run with his second double to left field to put Savannah ahead 3-0. The Gnats chased the Braves' (12-21) Arodys Vizcaino with a three-run fifth. CF Pedro Zapata led off the fifth with a single, and after a LF Juan Lagares fly-out, Flores singled cleanly into left to put runners at the corners. A passed balled on Rome catcher Christian Betancourt brought Zapata home with the fourth Savannah run and moved Flores up to second. Marte reached on an error and then C Kai Gronauer ripped a double straight away to center field over the head of Braves' CF Kyle Rose to bring home Flores and Marte to give the Gnats a 6-0.
The Braves picked up their first run against Gnats RHP Brandon Moore in the seventh inning on an RBI single from 3B Jordan Kreke. Moore threw seven strong innings with six strikeouts and just one walk, yielding one run on five hits. Rome made it interesting with a run against reliever Collin McHugh in the ninth. The Braves had the bases loaded with two outs to bring the tying run to the plate, but McHugh shut the door when Rome 2B Matt Weaver lined out to Marte at third to end the game.
The Gnats look for their fourth-straight win Friday night at 7:05 when they send LHP Jimmy Fuller (4-1, 1.63) to the hill to take on LHP Brett DeVall (0-1, 3.60) for Rome.
