Doyle Dominates Again in 5-0 Win
May 13, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
The league's leader in earned run average and in strikeouts lengthened his lead in both categories as Terry Doyle led the Kannapolis Intimidators to their fourth shutout performance of the season with a 4-0 win against the Delmarva Shorebirds. The Intimidators have won four straight.
Doyle (4-2) threw seven scoreless to drop his ERA to a league-best 0.96 through his first seven starts. Through five innings, Doyle had just four strikeouts, but he tallied double digit strikeouts for the third straight time as he struck out the last six he faced and seven of his last eight. He sent down 14 straight from bases loaded in the third inning on. Orlando Santos and Garrett Johnson each tossed one-two-three innings as well to complete the Intimidators (18-16) fourth shutout of the season. Doyle has struck out 35 and walked one in his last three starts, 22 innings.
Matt Hobgood, the fifth overall pick in the 2009 draft struggled with his control and was saddled with the loss. In the first inning, Daniel Wagner reached on a bunt single, moved to second on a passed ball, to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nick Ciolli.
Hobgood (1-2) pitched through the fourth but it was the fourth that gave the righty the most trouble. He allowed a walk to Brady Shoemaker and a single to center by Kevin Dubler. The next batter Jake Oester doubled down the line in right to score two and he ended up at third on an error by the catcher. He then scored as Wagner hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. The Intimidators got another run in the eighth on a double by Colligan and another sacrifice fly, this time from Shoemaker.
The Intimidators are now two games above .500 for the first time this season and look to make it three straight against the Shorebirds (16-17) on Friday at 7:05 pm as Cameron Bayne will take to the hill, he will be opposed by Jesse Beal.
