Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC- Jose Ramirez tossed a career-high 8.0 scoreless innings allowing just three hits, as the Charleston RiverDogs held on to beat the Augusta GreenJackets, 3-2, in front of 5,843 fans and service men and women in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Thursday night.
Charleston has won four games in a row to climb back to .500 at 17-17, while Augusta has now lost two straight to fall to 19-15.
Ramirez (2-0), rated as the No, 20 prospect in the Yankees farm system according to Baseball America,
did not walk a batter and fanned five in the win. The Dominican native retired 16 straight batters between the second and seventh innings before allowing a two-out triple to Luke Anders, but escaped the inning without a run scoring.
Ronny Marte entered the ninth for Charleston and gave up two hits and a walk to load the bases with two out. Tommy Joseph then lined a two-run single to right cutting the deficit to 3-2. With Ryan Lollis batting, Charleston catcher Kyle Higashioka threw behind Nick Liles at second bases, which was picked out of the dirt by Kelvin Castro. Castro threw to third baseman Garrison Lassiter who tossed back to Jimmy Paredes who applied the game-ending tag out on Liles as he attempted to slide back into second base.
Marte registered his third save of the year in a ninth inning in which he surrendered two runs on three hits.
Charleston scored all three of its runs with two outs in the second against Augusta's Kyle Vazquez via two-run double by Kelvin Castro and a RBI double by Ray Kruml.
Rob Lyerly led the RiverDogs charge, going 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Justin Milo notched two hits for his second straight multi-hit game. Luke Murton went 0-for-4 and ended his on-base streak at 29 games.
All 15 runs that have scored in the first two games of this series have come with two outs.
Game three of this series is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Friday night. Charleston sends right-hander Kelvin Perez (2-0, 1.13 ERA) to the mound, while Augusta counters with right-hander Chris Heston (1-3, 4.80 ERA).
