Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Charleston, SC - Two big late-game defensive plays sealed a second straight win for the Charleston RiverDogs over the Augusta GreenJackets on Thursday night in a 3-2 GreenJackets setback.

The first came with two outs in the seventh inning and the GreenJackets trailing 3-0. Luke Anders hit a drive deep to right-center, but center fielder Ray Kruml had it timed well and snatched a ball headed over the fence to rob Anders of a home run. Kruml couldn't hang on for the out though and Anders ended up with a two-out triple. He would eventually be left standing at third to end the seventh inning.

In the ninth came the second key defensive play for the RiverDogs. Ryan Cavan doubled with one out and moved to third on Chris Dominguez's infield single. With two outs, Nick Liles walked to load the bases and Tommy Joseph singled to drive home a pair and bring the GreenJackets to within a run. The rally ended with Ryan Lollis at the plate as a pitch to him squirted away from catcher Kyle Higashioka. Liles strayed a little too far off second and Higashioka's throw down there resulted in a rundown that caught Liles for the third out of the inning and the end of the game.

Charleston scored all three of their runs in the second inning and has now scored eight of their nine runs in this series in the second. With two outs and runners at the corners, Kelvin Castro doubled home a pair. Ray Kruml followed with a double to extend the RiverDogs lead to 3-0. All three hits in the second off Kyle Vazquez were doubles.

Vazquez (3-1) would settle down and fire six solid innings, allowing three runs - all in the second and all earned - on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

RiverDogs starter Jose Ramirez kept the GreenJackets at bay in eight brilliant shutout innings. Ramirez (2-1), in his second start against Augusta this season, allowed three hits and struck out five without walking anyone. Ronny Marte survived both runs in the ninth inning on three hits and a walk to earn his third save of the season.

For the second straight night, all the runs from both teams scored with two outs. After two games, all 15 runs in the series have crossed the plate with two outs in their respective innings.

Chris Heston (1-3, 4.80) toes the rubber for the GreenJackets, as Augusta will need to win the next two games to earn a split in this series. He'll face Kelvin Perez (2-0, 1.13), the owner of the league's best ERA. First pitch from Joseph P. Riley Park will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
