Hickory Crawdads News Release
GREENSBORO, NC - The Hickory Crawdads came up just short, 4-2, against the Greensboro Grasshoppers before 7,010 fans at NewBridge Bank Park on Thursday night.
The Grasshoppers (15-19) struck first with three runs (two earned) in the bottom of the first inning against RHP Matt Thompson (3-1) and the Crawdads (21-13). The inning started with consecutive solo homers by CF Justin Bass and LF Tom Hickman, with the third run scoring on a grounder later in the frame.
Hickory got on the board in the top of the second with a solo home run of its own by DH Vinny DiFazio to lead off the frame. Thompson settled in throughout his next four innings of work, surrendering only one more run, while striking out six to keep the 'Dads close.
Down 4-1 after four, RF Ed Koncel led off the fifth with another solo home run against Greensboro starter LHP Edgar Olmos (2-1). Koncel's long ball brought the Crawdads within two, but both bullpens blanked the opposition's offense and the 4-2 Grasshoppers lead held up.
RHP Andrew Doyle dealt three scoreless relief innings for Hickory, while RHP Arquimedes Caminero and RHP Alejandro Ramos dealt two scoreless innings apiece for Greensboro. Thompson was tagged with the loss, Olmos earned the win and Ramos logged the save.
