Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Hagerstown Suns (17-16) used a three-run first inning and a Souza home run to end a four-game losing streak and defeat the West Virginia Power (14-19) 5-2 on Thursday night.

The Suns got to an early start with three runs in the first inning. Francisco Soriano led off with a single off Power starter Kyle McPherson (2-4) followed by a Sean Nicol doubled to score him. Three batters later with runners on the corners and one out, left fielder Destin Hood hit a double into left field, scoring Nicol and Justin Bloxom for a 3-0 lead.

After West Virginia scored on a Jose Hernandez single into right in the second off Hagerstown's Trevor Holder (2-1), the scoreboard remained 3-1 until the sixth.

In the bottom half of the sixth with second and third and one out, Soriano hit the ball into center for an out. Brett Newsome scored from third before Sandy Leon was tagged out trying to advance to third, adding a run to make it 4-1.

Hagerstown got more help from their hitting in the bottom of the seven. Against Brandon Holden, Steven Souza hit a solo home run to deep left, his sixth of the year and second in two games, to give the Suns a 5-1 lead.

West Virginia got some power as well the next half inning from David Rubenstein, who led off with a solo home run to straight-away center off Paul Applebee to cut the lead to 5-2. The Power got another runner on, but Wanel Vasquez came in and shut the door from his second save and a Suns win.

Holder earns his second straight win after pitching six innings, allowing one unearned run and striking out three. Applebee went 1.2 innings in the relief, giving up one run with a strikeout. Vasquez pitched the final one-and-a-third, no allowing a hit.

McPherson gets the loss after five innings of work. He allowed three runs, all in the first inning, and struck out five. Holden pitched two frames with two runs. Duke Welker pitched a scoreless eighth with a strikeout.

The Suns even the series at one game apiece with the Power. Hagerstown and West Virginia will return to the field on Friday at 6:35 p.m. Gates to Municipal Stadium will open at 5:35 p.m. Remaining tickets are limited.
