
Legends Shut out Charleston 7-0 Behind Cruz

(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky. ) Luis Cruz allowed two hits in the first seven innings and Zach Johnson drove in three runs as the Lexington Legends shut out the Charleston RiverDogs 7-0 Friday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
Johnson put the Legends in front with a two-run homer in the first inning.
In the bottom of the third, Jordan Scott led off with an infield single, went to second on a balk and scored on a double by Johnson. After Matt Duffy struck out, Alex Todd walked, and Roberto Pena singled to produce another run. Todd went to third on Pena's hit and Pena advanced to second on the throw to third. Charleston starter Will Oliver then issued consecutive walks to Drew Muren and
Emilio King to force in another run, and the Legends led 5-0.
The Legends added another run in the seventh on a single by Duffy, an infield out, a wild pitch, and an RBI ground out by Muren.
Lexington shortstop Jimmy Howick hit the first home run of his professional career leading off the eighth inning to close out the scoring.
The three runs batted in by Johnson gave him 29 for the season, which puts him in a tie for the South Atlantic League lead with Matt Skole of Hagerstown.
Cruz (1-1) struck out six and walked one in seven innings to earn his first victory of the season. Murilo Gouvea pitched the last two innings and allowed one hit while striking out four batters.
The Legends split the four-game series with the RiverDogs, who are in first place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division. The Legends, now six games behind Charleston, remain at home for a three -game series against the Savannah Sand Gnats, an affiliate of the New York Mets. Game time Saturday is 7:05 p.m.
Attendance 4,932
The three runs batted in by Johnson gave him 29 for the season. He is tied with Hagerstown's Matt Skole for the league lead.
