Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Kannapolis Intimidators second baseman Ross Wilson had a red-letter day on Friday night, going 4-5 at the plate with three home runs and eight RBI's - including the go-ahead grand slam in the ninth inning - to lead the Intimidators to a 9-5 win over the Augusta GreenJackets in front of 5,311 at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
For the longest time, Wilson's two-run shot in the third inning provided the only runs of the game before the lead changed hands multiple times late in the contest. The GreenJackets grabbed the lead for the first time in the sixth inning, sending eight to the plate and tying the game on RBI singles by Ben Thomas and Eric Sim. Carlos Willoughby's sacrifice fly in the sixth gave Augusta their first lead of the night at 3-2.
Kannapolis stormed right back to tie things in the top of the seventh inning on Kevan Smith's RBI double that knotted the game at three. The GreenJackets wasted no time in taking a second lead as Shawn Payne singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Jose Cuevas followed with his third home run of the series - a two-run shot - to give the GreenJackets their second lead of the night at 5-3.
The Intimidators would go on to score the game's final six runs - all off the bat of Wilson. His two-run homer in the eighth tied the game at five. With two outs and a man at first for Kannapolis in the ninth, Keith Bilodeau allowed a single and a walk to load the bases for Wilson. Wilson's third home run of the night cleared the bases and capped an eight-RBI night for the Intimidators' second baseman. Coming into the game, Kannapolis had just four home runs as a team all season long - the third-fewest total in all of Minor League Baseball.
The GreenJackets got a man on in the ninth inning on a one-out base hit, but Steven Upchurch (1-0) retired three of the four he faced to seal the win for Kannapolis as the Intimidators salvaged the series split. Bilodeau (0-1) surrendered both Wilson's game-tying and go-ahead home runs to take the loss for the GreenJackets.
Chris Marlowe, Augusta's starter, lasted just four innings in his third start of the season. He allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out four in his fourth start of the season. Augusta pitchers set a new single-game high this season with 11 walks in the contest.
On Saturday night, the GreenJackets welcome the Hagerstown Suns to Augusta to start a three-game series. Bryce Bandilla (1-0, 1.29) takes the ball for the GreenJackets in the series opener against Brian Dupra (1-3, 4.15) on the team's second Fireworks Night of the season. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
