Rome, GA - The Hagerstown Suns (11-9) used Justin Miller's ninth inning grand slam to cap a late rally and beat the Rome Braves (5-16), 9-3, and take the four game series three-game-to-one in Rome, GA, on Friday night.
Miller's grand slam was his first home run of the season and capped a five RBI night for the Suns' first baseman, who also tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth inning with an RBI fielder's choice. His grand slam was the Suns' fifth of April, bringing the team within three of the South Atlantic League record of eight grand slams in a single season.
Steven Sousa scored the tying run in the eighth inning after hitting his second double of the night, and finished the game 2-for-5 with an RBI. Matt Skole continues to lead the SAL in RBIs (29), collecting two more in the game without the benefit of a hit. Outfielder Billy Burns extended his hitting streak to seven consecutive games, going 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.
Suns' reliever Aaron Barrett (2-0) earned his second win in consecutive outings, pitching perfect eighth and ninth innings while striking out four of the six batters he faced. Starting pitcher Kylin Turnbull did not factor in the decision after dealing five strong innings, allowing one run on five hits, no walks and three strike outs.
Braves' relief pitcher Jean Carlos Gil (0-2) suffered the loss and was charged with four runs in his three innings of work. Clint Wright was hit for three runs out of the bullpen. Rome starter David Filak allowed two unearned runs on two hits, four walks and five strike outs over five innings for a no-decision.
The Suns will travel to Augusta, Georgia to begin a three game series with the GreenJackets on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Brian Dupra (1-3) will start for the Suns against Augusta's LHP Bryce Bandilla (1-0).
