Lexington Legends News Release
Lexington starter Mike Foltynewicz and relievers Jason Chowning and Jorge DeLeon combined to strike out 16 Savannah batters as the Lexington Legends defeated the Sand Gnats 7-1 Thursday night in front of 5,340 fans at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
Foltynewicz (5-7) scattered four hits in six innings. The win is his fifth in his last six decisions. Chowning pitched the seventh and eighth and struck out five. Jorge DeLeon retired the side in order in the ninth while striking out two.
Lexington opened the scoring in the fourth. After Mike Kvasnicka singled and Telvin Nash walked, Tyler Burnett beat out a bunt, and Kvasnicka scored when Savannah catcher Albert Cordero's throw to first was wide for an error. One out later, Ben Heath doubled, scoring Nash. Burnett was thrown out trying to score on Heath's hit, leaving the Legends with a 2-0 lead.
Savannah scored its only run in the fifth when Jet Butler led off with his first home run of the season.
The Legends countered with one in their half of the fifth. Ben Orloff singled, and advanced to second on Delino DeShields Jr.'s sacrifice bunt.
DeShields was safe at first when Savannah first baseman Joe Bonfe couldn't handle the throw from pitcher Gonzalez Germen. A passed ball allowed both runners to advance, and Jay Austin's sacrifice fly scored Orloff from third.
Lexington added four more runs in the eighth. With one out, Enrique Hernandez and Heath singled. One out later, Orloff walked to load the bases.
Austin was hit by a pitch to plate Hernandez. Kvasnicka then singled to right, driving in Orloff and DeShields and giving the Legends their final margin. Germen (6-5), the Savannah starter, took the loss. He allowed three runs in five innings.
The series finale between the Legends and Sand Gnats is Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
