
Baker Flurishes in Debut as Shorebirds Win 7-3

Salisbury, Md. - It didn't take long for David Baker to acclimate himself to the South Atlantic League as he tossed a seven-inning shutout in his debut to lead the Delmarva Shorebirds (44-47, 9-12) to a 7-3 win over the Asheville Tourists on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds have a two games to one lead in the series.
The Shorebirds scored first in the second inning. Jeremy Nowak and Adam Gaylord drew back-to-back walks to open the inning. Then, Michael Rooney dropped a sacrifice bunt to put two runners in scoring position. Garabez Rosa followed with a single through the left side of the infield to plate Nowak. Then, Riley Hornback delivered a flare single down the right field line to give the Shorebirds a 2-0 lead. Then, Sammie Starr hit a bouncer to the left side and beat out the double play to bring home Rosa.
In the seventh, the Shorebirds added three more runs to build a 6-0 lead. Starr and Michael Mooney hit singles to open the innings. Then, on an error by the first baseman Dominic Altobelli, Starr scored to increase the lead to 4-0. Mooney scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Webb to make it a 5-0 lead. Later in the inning, Webb came into score on a wild pitch.
The night belonged to David Baker, who tossed a career high seven innings to earn his first South Atlantic League win. He retired 14 of the first 15 batters and did not allow a runner to reach second base until the sixth inning. Baker struck out four batters and walked just one.
The Shorebirds added a run in the eighth inning on a tapper to the third base side of the mound by Mooney that scored Rosa, who led off with a double.
In the ninth, Dustin Garneau ended the shutout by launching a three-run homer to left field to cut the deficit to 7-3. Tim Adleman got Corey Dickerson to fly out to left field to end the game.
The Shorebirds and Tourists square off in game four of the series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Jarret Martin is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
