Great Lakes Loons News Release
LANSING, MI - A first inning run was all the Lansing Lugnuts needed Friday night.
Left-handers Marc Rzepczynski and Edgar Estanga combined on a 10-hit shutout of the Great Lakes Loons at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing's 1-0 victory. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Loons.
The Lugnuts struck for the game's lone run in the first inning. Justin Jackson doubled to lead off the bottom half of the frame. John Tolisano followed with a one-out single to put runners at second and third. Then catcher Matt Liuzza followed with a ground ball to third that Brian Mathews made a diving play on, but it allowed Jackson to score.
Bobby Blevins (2-4) fired six innings in his first start of the season, striking out a career-high 10 batters, but he was the tough-luck loser. Blake Brannon hurled two perfect innings of relief.
Rzepczynski (1-1) struck out six in five innings of work, allowing seven hits. Estanga pitched the final four for his third save. Neither team walked a batter.
Tolisano recorded three hits in the game - a single, double and triple - but Blevins and Brannon combined to retire every other hitter following the Jackson double to begin the game.
Erik Kanaby had three hits to lead the Loons. The Loons had a chance to tie the score in the top of the ninth inning. Silverio singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Pedro Baez. Justin Fuller followed with a single to right. Silverio tried to score but was gunned out at the plate by strong-armed right fielder Moises Sierra, whose throw was up the third-base side of the plate, but in time to retire Silverio.
The Loons (25-28) and Lugnuts (29-25) conclude their series Saturday in Lansing. The game will start at 7:05pm ET and will be carried in Mid-Michigan on the radio flagship home for Great Lakes Loons baseball, ESPN 100.9-FM, and worldwide online at Loons.com. Right-hander Kyle Smit (1-3) will be opposed by lefty Brad Mills (3-2).
The Loons return to Dow Diamond Sunday for the start of an eight-game homestand and a four-game series against Fort Wayne. Gametime Sunday is 3:05pm. It's a Family Fun in the SUNday with a pre-game Youth Baseball Clinic beginning at noon and a post-game Kids Run the Bases. Both events are presented by Farm Bureau Insurance.
The Great Lakes Loons are the second-year Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
