Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Jay Leach was announced as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins' interim head coach on Saturday afternoon. He wasted no time picking up his first win behind the bench as Leach's Penguins dispatched of the Albany Devils, 4-0, at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on Saturday night.
Leach assumed the Penguins' coaching duties after Mike Sullivan was summoned to Pittsburgh on Saturday to take over as its head coach.
Tristan Jarry made 22 saves for his first career shutout while the rest of team put together a performance that drew high praise from their new coach.
"They played exceptionally well," Leach said. "They knew the circumstance with me coming in with just the crazy day they've had, too. I said to them in the room that I really appreciate their effort. Guys were doing everything I think we've been working on since day one."
Kevin Porter scored the game's first goal at 17:01 after receiving a drop pass from Dominik Simon and beating Devils goalie Yann Danis to his short side.
Porter's goal triggered the second Teddy Bear Toss of the season at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton extended its lead to 2-0 just 22 ticks into the second period thanks to Tom Kostopoulos.
The Penguins went up 3-0 with Porter's second goal of the game which, like his first tally, credited assists to Simon and Carter Rowney. Porter's goal came at 15:47 of the middle frame and was his fifth of the season.
Scott Wilson scored on the power play at 6:32 of the third period, improving the Penguins' score to 4-0.
The Penguins finished the game one-for-two against the league's top penalty kill and shut down Albany's top-ranked power play on four different man advantage opportunities.
Leach will have several days of practice to leave his mark on the team before the Penguins play their next game on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at PPL Center against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Puck drop between the Penguins and Phantoms is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
