December 12, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - In front of an enthusiastic throng of 11,127 fans on Saturday at The Q on Star Wars Night, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters held off the Chicago Wolves for a 2-1 victory in front of their second-largest home crowd this season. With the win, the Monsters' second consecutive victory, Lake Erie improved to 15-6-1-2 overall this season and with a .688 points percentage, currently occupy second place alone in the AHL's Central Division standings.
After a physical opening frame slid by mostly scoreless, the Monsters claimed a 1-0 lead at 19:13 when Lake Erie winger Oliver Bjorkstrand scorched home his first career professional goal with Trent Vogelhuber and Justin Falk collecting assists on the play.
In the middle stanza, Daniel Zaar forced a turnover on his defensive blue line and streaked the length of the ice, burying his team-leading seventh marker of the season, an unassisted score, at 3:33 to make it 2-0 Monsters. Chicago answered back with an Ivan Barbashev tally at 12:57, but after a hard-fought final period, the Monsters came away 2-1 winners and the proud owners of a weekend home sweep of the Wolves in the first two meetings of an eight-game season series.
Clad in specialty Stormtrooper-themed jerseys that were auctioned off following the game to benefit Toys for Tots of Northeast Ohio, the Monsters relied on their goaltender Anton Forsberg on Saturday. Thanks to a 23-save performance in victory, the 22 year-old Swedish national nudged his record in net to 10-2-1 overall this season. Meanwhile, Pheonix Copley took the loss for the Wolves on Saturday despite stopping 23 of the 25 Lake Erie shots he faced.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Wednesday clash vs. the Grand Rapids Griffins with full coverage underway from The Q at 7:00 pm on AM 1420 The Answer and the Monsters Hockey Network.
