Falcons Lose Shootout Thriller

Allentown, PA - The Springfield Falcons tied the game three different occasions but fell in a shootout to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms by a score of 5-4 on Saturday night.

Andrew MacDonald began the game's scoring with a one-timer for his second of the year. Jay Rosehill and Cole Bardreau assisted on the goal at 10:03. Domenic Monardo responded with his third of the season just 1:08 later. His goal beat goaltender Anthony Stolarz glove-side by shooting the puck off the post and finding the back of the net. Corey Potter and Philip Samuelsson assisted on the goal. Two minutes after the goal, Dustin Jeffrey was awarded a penalty shot but was denied by Stolarz. Taylor Leier regained the Phantoms lead with a power play goal at 17:25. His seventh of the season was assisted by Petr Straka and Nick Cousins.

Dan O' Donoghue tied the game up with his second of the season 4:43 into the second frame. Laurent Dauphin found the forward in the slot with the secondary assist credited to Matthias Plachta. The game remained tied at two heading into the third period.

Lehigh Valley struck early in the frame with two quick goals. Danick Martel opened the third period with a goal 1:29 in. His tenth of the year was assisted by Maxim Lamarche and Davis Drewiske. MacDonald gave the Phantoms a 4-2 lead 3:44 into the third with a power play goal. His second of the night and third of the season was assisted by Cousins and Straka. The Falcons would respond six minutes later with a rebound goal from Jeffrey on a Jon DiSalvatore shot. Steven Delisle also tallied the assist to move the game to a 4-3 score in favor of the Phantoms. At 13:24, Eric Selleck scored on a rebound from a Delisle slap shot to tie the game at a 4-4 score. Jeffrey recorded the other assist which eventually forced overtime.

Neither team could score during the five-minute overtime. The Falcons also had a power play toward the end of the overtime but could not solve Stolarz. In the shootout, Leier and Straka scored for Lehigh Valley while Jeffry and DiSalvatore were stopped as the Falcons lost their fourth straight road game. Nicklas Treutle made 34 stops in the game and fell to a record of 5-5-0. Stolarz saved 33 shots and improved to 11-6-1.

The Falcons remain on the road with a Wednesday night contest against the Portland Pirates at 7:00 p.m. The Birds return home to the MassMutual Center next Friday and Saturday for games beginning at 7 p.m.
