JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (17-20, 54-53) fell 9-3 to the Montgomery Biscuits (20-17, 54-53) at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Monday night.
The Biscuits scored eight of their nine runs in the final four innings, and the victory evened the series at a victory apiece through the first two games.
Starter Chris Archer (6-6) earned the win for Montgomery while Jacksonville starter Jose Alvarez (1-3) took the loss. Archer threw six innings, allowing two runs on six hits as he wins for the first time against Jacksonville this season in his fourth start against the club.
After Montgomery took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, the Suns tied the game in the bottom of the third with a leadoff homer by Neil Sellers. Jacksonville took the lead in the fifth, with Paul Gran delivering a RBI single that brought home Jake Smolinski to give the Suns a 2-1 advantage.
The Biscuits retook the lead in the sixth; with Cole Figueroa driving home a pair of runs on a double to give the Biscuits a 3-2 lead. An inning later, the Suns were a strike away from getting out of the inning without allowing a run, but Tim Beckham hit a two RBI single for the Biscuits to extend the lead to 5-2. Figueroa would follow with an RBI single to cap the three-run seventh as the Biscuits led 6-2.
Matt Sweeney homered to start the eighth inning to put the score at 7-2. The Suns got a run back in the bottom of the eighth with Ben Lasater delivering an RBI double to make it a 7-3 game going into the ninth. Facing Suns reliever Sandy Rosario, Henry Wrigley smashed a two-run homer over the left field wall to put the lead at 9-3, which would be the final score.
Gran, Lasater, and Smolinski all had multi-hit games for the Suns, with each batter going 2-4.
The Suns and Biscuits will play the third game of the five game series on Tuesday night at the Baseball Grounds. Tuesday's game will feature "Fifty Cent Family Feast Night" with Suns fans having the chance to purchase fifty cent hot dogs, peanuts, and ice cream treats.
Right-handed pitcher Omar Poveda (6-5, 5.48 ERA) will pitch for Jacksonville against Montgomery's right-hander Shane Dyer (5-6, 4.62 ERA).
