KODAK, Tenn. - Another strong pitching performance by the Tennessee Smokies' starting rotation propelled them to their second win in as many nights against the Birmingham Barons, 5-2. Marco Carrillo's five-strikeout performance helped the Smokies to their third straight win and improve their second-half record to 18-19, 61-46 overall.

Carrillo was impressive in picking up his first win as a starter with the Smokies. Along with the five strikeouts in his seven innings of work, Carrillo (5-1) allowed only one run on four hits, walking one.

Birmingham took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Jon Gilmore led off the inning with a solo home run to left.

The Smokies answered quickly in the bottom half. Josh Vitters reached on an infield single and Blake Lalli was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Luis Flores and Matt Spencer followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to bring in three runs and give the Smokies a 3-1 advantage.

The lead grew to 4-1 in the fourth, as the Smokies loaded the bases with one out and Ty Wright brought in Nate Samson with a sac fly to right. The Smokies added another insurance run when Vitters singled to score Jim Adduci in the seventh, extending the margin to 5-1.

Carrillo would give way to the Smokies bullpen after the seventh. Jeff Beliveau came in and surrendered one run in his one inning of work.

Marcus Hatley picked up his second save of the season after striking out two in a scoreless ninth for the Smokies. Hector Santiago (4-3) took the loss for Birmingham, lasting only 3.2 innings and surrendering four runs on five hits.

Tennessee will look to extend their winning streak in Game 3 against Birmingham Tuesday night at 7:15 at Smokies. The Smokies will start Trey McNutt (1-4, 4.82) and will face the Barons Charlie Leesman (8-4, 3.74). For tickets fans can visit www.smokiesbasball.com or call (865) 286-2300.
