TODAY'S GAME: Today's matchup will feature a plethora of new faces on both sides including the pitching matchup. RHP Zeke Spruill is up from A+ Lynchburg to make the start for the M-Braves against LHP James Gillheeney, just up from A+ High Desert. Today's lineup will feature the newest acquisitions by the Mariners, 3B Francisco Martinez (traded from Detroit) and OF Chih-Hsien Chiang (traded from Boston)
JACKSON GENERALS RECAP: - Generals' reliever Stephen Pryor struck out five in-a-row to end the General's 2-1 victory over the Mississippi Braves in the opener of a five-game set at Pringles Park. Pryor picked up the win, which was his second in three days. James McOwen had a bases loaded, two out single in the bottom of the eighth scoring Scott Savastano that proved to be the game winner. Jackson has played three consecutive one-run games (2-1) and 32 this season (17-15). Jackson starter James Paxton tossed a season high 6.1 innings, but settled for a no decision despite striking out eight and walking none. He allowed just one run on five hits. Stephen Pryor (2-1) relieved Steve Delabar with the bases loaded in the eighth and fanned two batters to end that inning and all three in the ninth. Braves' reliever Benino Prunedo (1-6) suffered the loss. Randall Delgado started for the M-Braves and surrendered just one run on five hits in seven innings. Scott Savastano was 2-for-3 with a double, scoring the game winning run on Sunday night. He was the only General with two or more hits. Rich Poythress had one hit and upped his hitting streak to seven straight while Carlos Triunfel increased his to six with a hit. Dan Nelson led the M-Braves by finishing 3-for-4.
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: Carlos Triunfel has hit safely in 14 of his last 16 games, batting .349 (22x63) with 7 runs scored, 1 home run and 6 RBI. Vinnie Catricala has recorded multi-hits in 7 of his last 9 games, batting .436 (17x39) with 7 runs scored, 5 doubles and 4 RBI. Scott Savastano has hit safely in 8 of his last 10 games, batting .400 (16x40) with 2 runs, 5 doubles, 1 home run and 7 RBI.
TODAY'S STARTER: LHP James Gillheeney makes his first Double-A start of the season after making 20 starts for A+ High Desert He was 1-2, with an 6.87 ERA in 4 starts for the Diamond Jaxx at the end of last season. Gillheeney went 6+ innings in 3 of his last 4 starts with the Mavericks.
GENERALS ADD TWO HOT BATS TO LINEUP: The Seattle Mariners were busy at the trading deadline and the Jackson Generals were affected by getting two impressive bats. OF Chih-Hsien Chaing, a native of Taiwan, acquired from Boston in the Erik Bedard/Josh Fields deal. Prior to the trade, while with w/AA Portland, he was leading the Eastern League in average (.340), RBI (76), doubles (37), slugging (.648), extra-base hits (59) and runs (68), 4th in on-base percentage (.402). Plus he left Portland with team-high 16-game hitting streak. 3B Francisco Martinez, acquired in the Doug Fister/David Pauley trade with Detroit batted .282 (98x348) with 14 doubles, 4 triples, 7 home runs and 46 RBI in 91 games with AA Erie in the Eastern League. He was rated as the 4th best prospect in the Detroit Tigers organization.
TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1972 - Nate Colbert ties one major league record with five home runs, and sets another with 13 RBI, as the Padres take a doubleheader from the Braves, 9-0, and 11-7. At age 8, on May 2, 1954, Colbert had been at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis to witness Stan Musial's five home runs in a doubleheader.
