Late Rally Pushes Cutters Past Jamestown

August 22, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release

The Williamsport Crosscutters edged the Jamestown Jammers 2-1 Monday night behind stellar pitching and a go-ahead two-run double by Bob Stumpo in the seventh inning.

An early pitching duel kept the game scoreless all the way until the top of the sixth. The Jammers finally notched a run off Williamsport reliever Matt Campbell in the frame, using an error and two hits to make it 1-0.

The Cutters offense came to life in the bottom of the seventh, as they used three straight hits to snatch the lead 2-1 off Jammers reliever Jacob Esch. Bob Stumpo's two-run double to right scored Geancarlo Mendez and Aaron Altherr to fuel the rally.

That score would be the final, as Jim Birmingham fired two shutout innings of relief to seal the win and earn his first professional save.

Cutters starter Lino Martinez finished with four shutout innings, allowing two hits, walking four, and striking out four. Matt Campbell pitched three innings of relief, picking up the win while allowing just one unearned run.

The Cutters will hit the road Tuesday for four games in Batavia and three in State College before returning home on August 29. Every matchup can be heard on ESPN Radio 104.1 FM, ESPN 1050 AM, or online at crosscutters.com
