Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Norwich, CT - The Aberdeen IronBirds broke a five-game winless stretch Monday evening at Dodd Stadium. The IronBirds defeated the Connecticut Tigers 7-3.
Aberdeen took a one-run lead in the first. Glynn Davis and Austin Knight reached on back-to-back singles. Mychal Givens walked, loading the bases for Joe Velleggia. The big power-hitting first baseman worked a free pass, scoring Davis, and making it 1-0.
The Tigers tied the game in the third inning. Javier Azcona (4) blasted a solo homer to left.
The game didn't stay tied for long. With one man out in the top of the fourth, Dudley Leonora reached on a single. Ryan Zrenda knocked him in with an RBI-triple. Martin Serrata knocked in Zrenda with a single, giving Aberdeen a 3-1 lead.
Connecticut cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fourth. Tyler Collins (6) blasted a solo homer to right-field, pulling the Tigers to within one.
Tyler Wilson would exit the game after the fifth. He allowed two runs on four hits in five innings of work. He walked none and struck-out three.
The Tigers tied it up in the sixth. Eugenio Suarez doubled. He stole third. Dean Green knocked Suarez in with an RBI-single.
Aberdeen took the lead once again in the top of the seventh. With one man down, Knight reached on an E-4. After Givens flied out to right, Velleggia walked. Wynston Sawyer singled to left, scoring Knight. Adam Davis then hit a slow roller over the mound. The shortstop Suarez couldn't come up with it cleanly behind second. It was ruled an infield-hit and an error, which allowed Velleggia to score from second and make it 5-3.
The IronBirds tacked on a sixth run in the eighth inning. Zrenda reached on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Serrata reached on a bunt single. A batter later, Knight knocked in Zrenda with a single.
Aberdeen score once more in the ninth on an RBI-single by Glynn Davis.
Matt Taylor (2-0) allowed a run on three hits in three innings of relief to pick up the win. Pedro Perez (0-2) took the loss.
The IronBirds will return to Ripken Stadium on Tuesday evening to open up a five-game home stand. First on the agenda is a three-game series against the Tigers. Aberdeen will have right-hander Ryan Berry (1-1, 5.89) on the hill. He'll go up against fellow right-hander Wilsen Palacios (4-3, 3.51).
The Aberdeen IronBirds sold out season tickets for the 10thstraight season. Group packages and single-game tickets, however, are still available for the 2011 season. For ticket information, contact our box office at (410) 297-9292 or visit us online at www.IronBirdsbaseball.com.
