Auburn Doubledays News Release

Auburn, NY - Looking for a perfect home stand, the Doubledays took the field on Monday night against the State College Spikes for the final game of a three-game series. Unfortunately, the Spikes spoiled the party in a 6-1 defeat of Auburn in front of 1,279 fans at Falcon Park.

The loss dropped the Doubledays lead for first place in the Pinckney Division to one game over Williamsport, who defeated Jamestown on Monday night.

Unlike Sunday night, when Auburn grabbed the early momentum with a first inning home run by Justin Miller, it was State College who started quickly scoring two runs in the second inning to take the early lead. Doubledays starter Manny Rodriguez issued two one-out walks that came back to bite him as both runners came home to score later in the frame.

The two-run lead was doubled in the third as State College used a pair of doubles to begin the inning, one by Wes Freeman and the other by Alex Dickerson, followed by a base-hit by Dan Gamache to put two more runs on the board to make the score 4-0 Spikes.

Manny Rodriguez allowed his fifth run of the night to score in the fourth when Taylor Lewis, after singling to start the inning, later scored on a wild pitch. Rodriguez's night was done after four innings, giving up five runs on eight hits, snapping the Doubledays' starting pitching streak of twenty consecutive innings without an earned run allowed.

Kelvin Lopez took over for Auburn in the fifth, making just his eighth appearance of the year. After posting a scoreless fifth, Lopez allowed a run in the sixth on an RBI double by Wes Freeman, plating Taylor Lewis from second on the play. It looked like Junior Sosa would also score on the play, but Sosa overran Lewis at third base, causing him to be out and help Lopez escape from the inning.

The Doubledays didn't score until the eighth inning, using a leadoff double by Angelberth Montilla to generate their first run when Jeremy Mayo singled him home. that was all the Doubledays were able to muster against the Spikes pitching staff, who scattered seven hits in the contest, four of those coming in the last two innings.

Auburn heads back to the road on Tuesday when they travel to third-place Mahoning Valley for a crucial three-game series at Eastwood Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm in Niles, OH. Fans are invited to listen to the live broadcast of the game on 89.1 FM in Auburn, NY or at www.auburndoubledays.com.
